Do you mean the Gnome desktop environment for Linux?
If so, is that still true?

The main user interface, the shell, is scripted in javascript these days.
And at least one Gnome cards games is scripted in Lua, so I guess
there is no veto against other scripting languages either.

Finally the "embeddable" scheme interpreter, Guile, supports Lua syntax
directly since version 2.0 (didn't try, but this is what the doc says).
