The developers have responded
by making the manual explicit on what text mode means in Lua.

And your laptop vendor tells you just not to set that EFI NVRAM
variable if you do not want to brick your PC, right? It is written in
the manual addendum, … oh and btw, by setting that your warranty
is now voided.
