P.S. The reason Lua 5.1 is matching something is because without
escapes, the pattern becomes:

  "[xC0-xEF][x80-xBF]*"

...which has a character range of "0-x" (decimal: 48-120) on both
sides, and by chance includes the full ASCII alphanumeric range, but
not space (decimal 32).
