Since I'm part of the gang I feel vaguely guility about this.  To get a more modern (and much more maintained) Windows distribution go to http://luadist.org/ and grab

(there's also batteries there for 64-bit OS X and Linux)

The idea is that this is the basis for the new Lua for Windows standard.

(OK, still Lua 5.1.5.  That's because the porting process to 5.2 is still lagging, not that Peter Drahos thinks it's unimportant)
