The size and overhead; and I'm not sure it is still maintained
Size can matter indeed, depending on use cases; but overhead is easily addressed by precompiling.
And it's still maintained; a substantially cleaned-up version will be published as part of LDT, Eclipse's Lua plugin, soon. Most of the work in progress in already published in branches of the Github repository.
