As somebody returning to programming after years of other work I have found that teaching myself Lua is considerably easier than learning to unpack and install Lua and the many add-ons contributed by the community.

I wonder if anybody can direct me to an "assume-I-know-nothing" tutorial on downloading and installing packages.  I am not familiar with the basic mechanism of Linux make and its competitors and further have to deal with the subtle differences needed to instal in OSX.  I am also just learning about the various repositories people use to post their contributions and the various packaging methods used such as Luarocks vs. tarballs etc.  I know that basically any directory structure can be set up but Lua and its add-ons seem to have some standard structure as the default and understanding that would help also.

If anybody can point me to one or more tutorials or manuals it would be a great help.
Thanks
