LuaRocks install local version?

LuaRocks offers this:

    make    Compile package in current directory using a rockspec.
    install Install a rock.

However, `install` does not utilize the present make.  It tries
to download and recompile the same package from the server instead 
of the one I customized locally.

Any way round this?
