They have just optimised it (well Kore did) for consoles, the speed improvement does not seem anything to shout about. Personally I have not used Kore Vm yet what makes this a good product is the addons they provide and the support they offer, yet you could package the different addons for vanilla Lua to do the same thing really. On the other hand maintaing your own optimised version and dedicating time to it would not seem advantageous for a game studio.
