A simple way to generate a nice PDF reference with hierarchical bookmarks:
  1. Download wkhtmltopdf stattic version eg: http://code.google.com/p/wkhtmltopdf/downloads .... wkhtmltopdf-0.10.0_rc1-static-i386.tar.lzma
  2. Unpack:
    xz -dc wkhtmltopdf-0.10.0_rc1-static-i386.tar.lzma | tar xvf -
  3. Run: 
     ./wkhtmltopdf-i386 http://www.lua.org/manual/5.1/index.html http://www.lua.org/manual/5.1/manual.html lua-ref-514.pdf
  4. Enjoy your neat new indexed lua reference manual:
    evince lua-ref-514.pdf

I would suggest simply using the Lua Reference Manual for version 5.1,
available freely online at http://www.lua.org/manual/5.1/manual.html.
There may or may not be a PDF version, I certainly haven't seen one,
but that doesn't change the relevance or availability of the content.
