Ultimately, I think it depends on how fragile you wish to allow your application to be. Even a C power patch for a few extra functions may break on certain platforms. For Lua-based methods, it's going to be kinda problematic if this involves an expectation of 'easy' portability unless there is very aggressive testing on lots of platforms...
