Hi John,

Do you know the Google Protocol Buffers project? It's not exactly what 
you're looking for but it sure touches on the same subjects. I'm using 
the protobuf library in a school project and though it was a bit of a 
pain getting it to work the investment has definitely paid off. If 
nothing else it might serve as inspiration for you :-)
