Luarocks root_dir is nil

I'm getting the following error:

$ luarocks list
/opt/local/bin/lua:
/usr/local/share/lua/5.1//luarocks/command_line.lua:90: attempt to
index field 'root_dir' (a nil value)

Any idea where this is coming from?

Luarocks is located here:
/usr/local/bin/luarocks

and my rocks are in
/usr/local/lib/luarocks/rocks/
