The current platform targets are
aix ansi bsd freebsd generic linux macosx mingw posix solaris
These were the relevant ones in 2006 when 5.1 was first released.
Are they still the relevant ones in 2010?
It seems that the main sore point is the availability of readline and
this seems also to be the only difference between some of those platforms.
So, how can we simplify the list above while being more flexible and
catering for more platforms?
