Usage of lua_lock

Hello lua-l,

I'm currently making a fix to Pluto involving lua_lock, and I'm
wondering when it would be appropriate to use lua_lock and lua_unlock.
I assume that the Lua API handles this well, but Pluto meddles in Lua's
internal structures a little bit to get its job done.  Any guidelines
on when lua_lock is necessary?
