Email notification on a forum is usually only for threads that you
"subscribe" to.

I do think forums encourage participation a bit more, because you
don't feel like you're spamming the entire universe every time you
post something. They also allow you to organize discussions into
topics, and allow formatting/images/etc. (whereas HTML is usually
discouraged on mailing lists).

I'm not arguing that Lua really needs one, just pointing out that
there are differences.
