Lua on Windows: lua51.dll versus lua5.1.dll

I'm not writing to suggest which DLL file name is better; it makes no 
difference to me which one is used.  I'd simply like to know where one 
can find a definitive answer regarding the cause of the divergence and 
which naming convention should be used going forward.
