Thank you for the helpful advice. By removing modules one by one from my
require chain, I eventually figured out that the DataDumper module (from
the wiki) collects a lot of information about every C function defined
in lua.

Because I was using a large SWIG-generated interface library, there were
many thousands of such functions. The result was that the loading of
that module was extremely slow.

I rewrote the module to only use the 'fastmode' version, and the
importing time dropped by 99%, which is sufficient for my needs.
