Haven't even figure out how to use it yet, let alone
shortcomings.

Supposed I would continue the Makefile path, are there
a list of standard MACROS that would be passed in when
built by luarocks like where to install, where to find
the library, where to find luac/bin2c, compiler flags,
link flags etc. ?
