detecting tolua++ in configure scripts

Can somebody suggest me how to detect tolua++ in my configure scripts?
I have tried with
AC_CHECK_LIB([tolua++], [tolua_open],,  AC_MSG_ERROR([tolua++ library 
not found!]))
and it works in Centos 4.3, but not in Gentoo, perhaps because of 
different autotools versions.
