Yes, I just rediscovered that it's implemented in table.concat (thanks Steffen). I learned about lua somewhere in 2004 or 2005, so I must have read about that algorithm in PiL before, I read that book from start to finish at that time. I guess I had forgotten about this particular chapter.

IIRC it already uses the algorithm that you are mentioning.

Yes, this function was introduced after the article was written: there was a need, it was filled...
