setlocal categories?

Hello,

Is there a description of what the setlocal's categories are for and 
what values they might expect?

I presume that 'monetary', 'numeric' and 'time' take a language code 
(e.g. 'en_US') and that 'collate' expect a character set (e.g. 
'UTF-8').

What about 'ctype'? What is it used for?

Also, how to a check for the current local values without setting them? 
I cannot see any 'getlocal' or such at first glance.
