What about a more general solution:

select(i,..)	-->	slice(i, i, ...)
skip(i, ...)	-->	slice(i, ...)
first(...)	-->	slice(1, 1, ...)
first(i, ...)	-->	slice(1, i, ...)
tail(...)	-->	slice(2, ...)
last(...)	-->	slice(-1, ...)
last(i, ...)	-->	slice(-i, ...)
