Hmm.. Why wouldn't you just create one more thread :) for the Lua system altogether, then message pass from the others (you can feed in whole Lua code chunks if you want). This would be a nice 'bolt in' if the messaging overhead is not too bad for you.

Of course, this would incur that the Lua chunks won't be simultaneously executed. But if they're small, but need the common state, this could be a solution.
