For better or worse, api_check's are
disabled by default. While debugging, they should be enabled.
I agree that the documentation should
say this somewhere. I did put a note on the LuaFaq, <http://lua-users.org/wiki/LuaFaq>
("Why doesn't Lua catch the errors") but it is probably not prominent
enough.
