FWIW I think it all makes sense as it is.
You wouldn't define a variable "do" (even if you were allowed to). So you wouldn't expect a.do to work, either.
But you might load "do" into an index on a table - for example, if you were counting the repetitions of words in a text file.
IMHO the two syntaxes are for different uses. It's okay that they are treated differently.
