GC in its own thread?

Could one place the GC into its own thread for usage say, in a game engine? 
I would think this would allow the game to maintain performance even during 
GC...

Does anyone have a simple guide to allowing {} blocks with LUA 5.0? I saw a 
patch against 4.0, but no good description on the changes needed...
