Why bug corrections are not incorporated into Lua?

Some time ago, a bug correction was sent (by Roberto, if 
i'm not mistaken) to this list related to a seg fault 
on "filehandle.close" (where it should 
be "filehandle:close").
I'd like to see the bug corrected in the official 
distribution. I'm afraid that it's too easy to type "." 
instead of ":" and make the whole app crash. How many 
Lua users would search the mailing list, apply the patch 
and recompile Lua?
I guess the documentation bug (lua_closethread) and the 
coroutine crash (again, i know it only happens in an 
invalid Lua program) are not that critical, but they 
could be corrected too.
