Try the following:

$ cat test.lua

print'enter name:'
name = io.stdin:read'*l'
print('name',name)

print'enter age:'
age = io.stdin:read'*l'
print('age',age)

$ lua test.lua
enter name:
bill
name    bill
enter age:
5
age     5
