There is a beta version of LuaOrb that uses Lua 4.0 available at
   http://www.tecgraf.puc-rio.br/luaorb/pub/lo_distr_011220_v2.tgz
The final release will come soon.
But it doesn't solve your problem with weak references...
We will wait until the final release of Lua 4.1 (or 5.0??)
to start working on this port.
