I like the mailing list as well; newsgroups are full of spam. Also, I
can let the list messages accumulate in a folder, and read or search
them at my leisure. I don't like needing some third party
(deja/google/whoever) to archive messages for me.

As far as news<->email gateways are concerned, they're no big deal to
configure, but then they introduce all the Usenet spam to the mailing
list.
