Yes, it's possible for news to be gatewayed to email and vice versa.
This happens for several newsgroups, especially those that used to be
mailing lists and that some users prefer to continue to read in that
way. For example, the XEmacs newsgroup works this way (actually, I
don't think the correspondence is 1-1, but at least bug reports to the
XEmacs address are gatewayed to the newsgroup).
