Yup.  That's exactly what happened. 

The link I used was the last one:
  ftp://csg.uwaterloo.ca/pub/lhf/lua/lua.tar.gz

Since it doesn't say "lua-4.0-beta", I guess it's 3.2.

3.2 dist. from one of the URLs. (I may be mistaken)

Maybe that is what happened to you? (Haven't checked the dist-manual, but
the one on the web page is at least OK.)
