According to the documentation, "all conversions from strings to numbers accept both a dot and the current locale mark as the radix character. (The Lua lexer, however, accepts only a dot.)", so how do you make that works? Here is what I get on a Fedora 24 desktop:

% echo $LANG; lua                                          
fr_FR.UTF-8

> "3,14" + 1 -- in French the radix character is a comma
