Same here. I do read some web-based forums regularly (using various
backend software) and just dealing with the interface to find unread
messages can be a time sink. For most things I much prefer a mailing
list and having new messages threaded into my inbox.

Being able to reply via email is also usually preferable to using a
web forum. One of the forums I read does send me all new content via
email, but it can't take replies that way. There have been plenty of
times where I had a response but decided not to bother because it
meant I'd have to deal with its lousy web interface to send it.

And here.

It's not an issue of filtering. I agree that if I wanted to split out
the messages to some other folder there's already enough header data
to do that. The problem comes when you want all new mail in one
place:

2204 N   Sep 25 Tom Rondeau     (   0) [Discuss-gnuradio] AGC loop and digital
2205 N   Sep 25 'Eric Blossom'  (   0) +->
2206 N   Sep 25 TM Tiwari       (   0) [Discuss-gnuradio] Problem in SVN using
2207 N   Sep 25 Johnathan Corga (   0) +->
2208 N   Sep 26 Diego 'Flameeye (   0) [Ffmpeg-devel] (Minor) Issues reported
2209 N Sep 25 Wesley Smith ( 0) Light User Data and C Data Processing
2210 N   Sep 26 varol kaptan    (   0) +->
2211 N   Sep 26 Andrew Johnson  (   0) [Tinycc-devel] Compound Literals
2212 N   Sep 26 Jason M. Hecker (   0) [xine-user] Scroll Lock Issues

Granted in this case "Light User Data" is a clue that it's Lua, but
you get the idea.
