Same here.  I do read some web-based forums regularly (using various
backend software) and just dealing with the interface to find unread
messages can be a time sink.  For most things I much prefer a mailing
list and having new messages threaded into my inbox.

Being able to reply via email is also usually preferable to using a
web forum.  One of the forums I read does send me all new content via
email, but it can't take replies that way.  There have been plenty of
times where I had a response but decided not to bother because it
meant I'd have to deal with its lousy web interface to send it.

It's not an issue of filtering.  I agree that if I wanted to split out
the messages to some other folder there's already enough header data
to do that.  The problem comes when you want all new mail in one
place:

Granted in this case "Light User Data" is a clue that it's Lua, but
you get the idea.
