I think at this point I'm the one missing something, because I have no
idea what you're confused about.

Ok my point is that hashing tuples is no different than hashing strings[1] so the performance profile should be the same. You seem to disagree but without being specific it's hard to go on. Also, I don't think Lua authors are down with tuples (I may be wrong but I don't think they see much value in them either), so there's little point to continue.
