I got a contradictory result:

$ cat foo.c
#include <stdio.h>

int main (void)
{
  FILE *f = fopen("foo", "r");
  int ret = fprintf(f, "dfoo");
  printf ("%d %d\n", ret, ferror(f));
}
$ gcc -o foo foo.c
$ ./foo
-1 1
