Override but not replace a metatable entry?

is this possible? I want to create a LUA 2 LUA extension that would allow 
tables to be shared across 2 LUA states (different machines via UDP/TCP). I 
need a way to send changes across the pipe when appropriate but still allow 
the basic functions to occur.
