ops! should read the mail before sending it!

lua_pushstring(L, name)
lua_gettable(L, LUA_GLOBALSINDEX);

behaves like:

lua_getglobal(L, name);

and,

lua_pushvalue(L, LUA_GLOBALSINDEX);

behaves like:

lua_getglobals(L);
