In principle, you can already use UTF-8 in Lua strings as
Lua is 8-bit clean. The standard string library of Lua
however does not support UTF-8 yet. I was interested in
doing UTF-8 support for lua strings but got a bit
distraced. Maybe you and I can work on it together?
